Opening Earth Market in BEIRUT
|
 |
On Tuesday the 20th of January, Slow Food Beirut will open Lebanon’s third Earth Market in Beirut, and from now on will take place every Tuesday from 9 am to 2 pm.
The Earth Market of Hamra-Beirut is part of a project in the ROSS program (Reconstruction, Employment, Services and Development) run by Italian Cooperation. Officially launched in March 2007 the project offers support to small producers through training courses and the opening of other two farmers’ markets in Lebanon: in Tripoli-Mina (opened on December 6, 2007) and Saida (opened on April 6, 2008). The project is implemented by the NGO UCODEP in collaboration with Slow Food Beirut and the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, and it is co-financed by the Tuscany Region.
The Earth Market of Beirut will take place in Hamra, a very central area renewed for its shops and cafés.
The markets will display goods of 15 Lebanese producers, including fruit and fresh vegetables, mouneh – local Lebanese preserves, manhaoushe – local bread served with thyme, distillates, honey, olive oil and natural soap produced by artisan methods.
The Lebanese Earth Markets are organized according to an international model designed by Slow Food, with rules adapted to local conditions. All the products for sale meet the criteria of good, clean and fair, according to Carlo Petrini’s definition. They are local and seasonal, and always presented by the people who have produced them.
The aim, as with all Lebanese Earth Markets, is not only to enable vendors to have opportunities to sell, but also for people to meet, socialize and support Lebanon’s unique culinary identity.
